Maybe it wasn't a good idea to get everybody from the warlords to the tiger drunk at a karaoke bar. But we know it was a bad idea to record it. (It was an even worse idea for us to buy it off ebay for astronomical prices and fill mixtapes with it.) Nevertheless, everybody got a turn in the soundstage and had to crank out a tune or two (or twenty, in Sai's place), regardless of musical talent or lack thereof. In addition to the vocal tracks, there's instrumental soundtracks, drama cds and tapes, and other audio ephemera of the era. None of it will help you figure out why, exactly, the series opener sounds just like the Pet Shop Boys' It's a Sin.
