These Nutcracker makeovers for our dolls were my Christmas present to Eider, to recreate her favorite Christmas story. I think them a very fitting medium to tell the story of a beloved toy come to life. Although they are inanimate objects, our dolls are important to us. They are not replacement children, but a mirror of ourselves. They allow us to express our imaginations with a potent, immediate realism forgotten by almost all grown-ups. They are our Winnie-the-Pooh, our Velveteen Rabbit, our Hobbes. They do not blink or tick or talk or light up. All that they are is composed inside our own heads, characters projected onto a static form. They are simple shapes and strings, and yet they remind us of the awesome power of dreams.
